One small step for you, one giant leap for your marketing

With the rise of social media, we’re all under pressure to ‘create’ whether we feel creative or not. You’ve likely come up blank when trying think of a new original idea, whether it’s for a blog post, an email, or a video. Some days the creative juices don’t flow when we want them to and then pour when we least expect it. That’s totally normal, and here’s why…

Creativity is just around the corner

Your best ideas might come to you in the shower, on a dog walk, or whilst cooking. It’s not because you can’t switch off from work, it’s simply because you’re in motion, you’re moving.

The link between physical activity (movement) and original thinking (creativity) is well established. There are numerous studies that conclude that movement stimulates creativity, not only provoking new ideas in greater quantity but of greater quality too. Some of these show that fluid movements of any kind enhance creativity more than angular movements, whilst others find that walking puts our brain into a better physiological condition to reach a creative state.

So, what steps can you take to boost your creativity?

The first step is to disconnect from digital distractions. Research shows that we can increase our performance on a creative, problem-solving task by 50% when we are immersed in nature. By detaching ourselves from technology – laptops, phones, social platforms, and apps – we’re able to think more creatively than when we’re digitally connected. So, leave your screens at home and get outside.

Next, move your body. As already mentioned, fluid movement helps to open our minds, so activities like yoga and swimming are ideal. Walking, for those who are able, is equally impactful. Creative output increases by up to 60% when we walk compared to when we sit. According to experts, we should walk outside to experience free-flowing ideas, but if that isn’t possible, walking on a treadmill is also beneficial.

Finally, find a friend – or maybe a stranger – to explore with! Whilst there are benefits to walking alone, walking in groups improves both our mental and physical health. Plus, the very act of walking side-by-side without having to make eye contact can alleviate social anxiety, making it easier to share ideas and speak freely. Stop trying to force ideas in the boardroom, instead let them flourish in nature!

We all experience creative blocks from time to time. Sitting in front of a screen or ‘brainstorming’ in a meeting room might draw out a suggestion or two, but if it’s new and original thinking you’re looking for, it’s time to walk away from the corporate environment altogether.

If you’re struggling to solve a business problem, think creatively, or generate new ideas, let’s explore the landscape of movement and marketing together. House of Comms facilitates netwalks, outdoor team building and walkshops to take the stress out of marketing, one step at a time.
